The Peugeot 208 was named European Car of the Year, the organizers announced, beating the favourite, the Tesla Model 3, into 2nd place.

Other contenders were:

  • BMW 1-Series
  • Ford Puma
  • Porsche Taycan
  • Renault Clio
  • Toyota Corolla

The Peugeot 208 gained 281 points, the Tesla Model 3 242 points and the Porsche Taycan 222.

“The car (the 208) stood out from its competitors thanks to its exceptional choice of powertrains which includes an electric version beside the traditional gasoline and diesel engine,” the organizers said in a statement from the Palexpo exhibition center in Geneva, Switzerland.

The all-electric Tesla Model 3 had been favourite to win. It has been incredibly successful in Europe since its introduction in February 2019, racing to the top of the electric car sales charts, even though it was about 3 times more expensive than other electric cars. It also outsold traditional premium cars like the BMW 3 Series, which were mainly gasoline and diesel powered.

Car of the Year is organized by seven major magazines in Europe: Auto in Italy, Autocar in the United Kingdom, Autopista in Spain, Autovisie in the Netherlands, L'Automobile Magazine in France, Stern in Germany and Vi Bilägare in Sweden.

60 reporters from 23 countries in Europe's automotive world voted for the winner.
